India is planning its first offshore airport at Vadhavan near Palghar, Maharashtra, with an estimated investment of INR 45,000 crore. Built on a reclaimed island, the airport will feature two parallel runways and terminals designed to handle up to 90 million passengers annually. It is also planned as a major air cargo hub with a capacity of three million metric tonnes per year. Integrated with the deep-draft Vadhavan Port, the airport will connect seamlessly to expressways, metro lines, high-speed rail, and the planned Uttan-Virar Sea Link, enhancing multimodal connectivity and trade along the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor.
India is moving ahead with the development of its first offshore airport along the Palghar coast in western Maharashtra. The total project cost is estimated at INR 45,000 crore, with approximately INR 25,000 crore allocated for reclaiming land from the sea, while the remaining funds will be used to construct the airport's infrastructure, including terminals, runways, and supporting aviation facilities. The airport will be entirely on a reclaimed island and is being planned to manage up to 90 million passengers annually.
The airport will have two parallel runways and is intended to become a major air cargo hub, capable of handling three million metric tonnes each year. Integration with the all-weather greenfield Vadhavan Port will ensure smooth transfer of cargo between sea and air transport, strengthening India's trade links.
Connectivity plans include a direct link to the Vadodara Mumbai Expressway, a metro connection to the Western Railway network, integration with the Mumbai Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, and access through the planned Uttan Virar Sea Link. These connections aim to make the airport easily accessible and integrate it with regional transport networks, facilitating efficient movement of both passengers and goods.
The airport and port development are part of the government's efforts to create a multimodal transport hub connecting India's industrial areas with global markets. The project aligns with the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. The Vadhavan Port, part of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, is projected to increase container handling capacity by 23.2 million TEUs, enhancing India's position as a global maritime hub and supporting economic growth.
A pre-feasibility study commissioned by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company is nearing completion, marking the transition to detailed planning and eventual execution. The airport, combined with port operations, aims to support both domestic and international logistics while reducing congestion at existing airports and improving regional trade efficiency.
