Synopsis

The Melapudur Road under bridge (RuB) in Trichy was closed this past week as the Trichy railway division carried out maintenance to replace two ageing steel girders on tracks between Trichy Junction and Palakkarai station. The project, costing INR 86 lakh, involves installing 20-metre long girders weighing a total of 50 tonnes. Traffic diversions were enforced by city police, affecting key commuter routes. With nearby railway RoBs also under renovation, congestion increased on alternate paths. Train operations continued with partial adjustments, while road access remained fully suspended until the work completes.

Maintenance work at the Melapudur Road under bridge in Trichy began this past week, requiring a complete closure for vehicles until reopening later this week. The Trichy railway division is replacing two old steel girders on the railway tracks linking Trichy Junction with Palakkarai station. Each girder is 20 metres long, and together they weigh around 50 tonnes. Officials stated that the INR 86 lakh maintenance work is part of periodic railway track upkeep to ensure safety and structural integrity.

To facilitate the replacement, city traffic police closed the entry and exit points of the subway at both the Palakkarai RoB end and the HPO traffic signal side. Railway teams demolished a portion of the median managed by the state highways department to remove the old girders and fit the new ones. Work is scheduled for completion with the under bridge reopening at 9 AM on Wednesday.

Traffic diversions were implemented to ease the impact on commuters. Vehicles approaching from Trichy Junction and Central bus stand were redirected through Convent Road, Bhima Nagar, and the Cauvery theatre route to reach the Palakkarai Prabhat roundabout. Traffic from Gandhi Market and Chathiram bus stand was rerouted via Mudaliyar Chathiram and Good Shed Bridge to reach Kallukuzhi and the HPO signal. Police warned that congestion could rise during peak hours, particularly as two nearby RoBs near Trichy Fort and the Junction station are already under renovation.

While train operations on the affected tracks are only partially impacted, road users experienced complete suspension of the under bridge access. Commuters and local transport services were advised to plan for extra travel time. Officials emphasized that the temporary inconvenience is necessary to maintain long-term safety and prevent future disruptions on both road and rail.
