Synopsis

Tiruchirappalli International Airport has posted a double-digit growth of around 10% in international cargo handling, reflecting stronger trade activity from central Tamil Nadu. Average monthly international cargo volumes increased from nearly 540 metric tonnes to about 590 metric tonnes, supported by new operational facilities. The airport has also begun using its transhipment facility to improve cargo connectivity and lower logistics costs. In parallel, plans for a domestic cargo terminal and the activation of an international courier facility are expected to widen cargo options for exporters and logistics players.

Tiruchirappalli International Airport has reported a healthy 10% increase in international cargo volumes, underlining its growing importance as a regional logistics centre. Airport data shows that average monthly international cargo movement rose from around 540 metric tonnes to close to 590 metric tonnes. Officials attributed this growth to improved handling capacity and better utilisation of available infrastructure.

A key factor behind the rise has been the start of operations at the airport's first transhipment facility. With this facility in place, cargo can now be transferred between flights at Tiruchirappalli, allowing consolidation of shipments and more efficient routing. This has helped reduce freight costs and has improved connectivity for destinations that do not have direct flight links from the city.

The airport has also been preparing to expand its cargo ecosystem further. Plans are in place for setting up a dedicated domestic cargo terminal with a proposed handling capacity of about 200 metric tonnes per month. The terminal is expected to cater to growing domestic freight demand and will complement the existing international cargo operations. Its location is seen as an advantage due to proximity to highways and regional production centres.

Another long-pending development is the International Courier Facility, which was notified a few years ago but had not commenced operations. Authorities have indicated that the facility will now be activated through a Public-Private Partnership model under an operations and maintenance arrangement. Once operational, it is expected to support faster movement of small parcels and documents, particularly for shipments to Gulf and Southeast Asian markets.

In recent years, Tiruchirappalli airport has been steadily improving its infrastructure to support both passenger and cargo growth. The recent cargo performance indicates that these efforts are beginning to show results, especially for exporters and logistics operators in central and southern Tamil Nadu who previously depended on larger metro airports.
