Southern Railway has announced a scheduled halt for the Chennai Bengaluru Double Decker Express at Tiruvallur railway station, responding to long-standing commuter demand from the suburban region. Although the halt has come into effect from earlier this week, passengers are currently unable to book tickets to or from Tiruvallur as the station has not yet been updated in the Passenger Reservation System. Railway officials have stated that such system updates usually take a few days. Commuters have also flagged unresolved ticket printing issues following a recent reservation system upgrade.
Southern Railway has introduced a halt for the Chennai Bengaluru Double Decker Express at Tiruvallur railway station, marking a long-awaited operational change for one of the busiest suburban hubs on the Chennai rail network. The daily service, operating as train numbers 22625 and 22626 between Chennai Central and Bengaluru, connects major urban centres and industrial clusters along the route. Tiruvallur station alone handles more than one lakh passengers daily, making the inclusion of this stop operationally significant.
The decision follows repeated representations from commuters and railway user groups who have been seeking better access to reserved express services from Tiruvallur. Until now, passengers largely depended on suburban trains or distant boarding stations, despite Tiruvallur's growing population and expanding residential catchment. Railway officials acknowledged that the halt was approved to improve travel convenience and distribute passenger load more evenly across services.
However, even though the halt has been officially announced, ticket bookings from Tiruvallur remain unavailable. The station has not yet been activated as a boarding or deboarding point in the Passenger Reservation System. Passengers checking online portals and reservation counters have reported that Tiruvallur does not appear as a valid option. Railway officials have clarified that reservation system updates generally take between two days and a week after such operational changes and are expected to be completed shortly.
Separately, railway user representatives have highlighted an ongoing issue linked to a recent upgrade of the Passenger Reservation System carried out late last year. According to a former member of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee, superfast train surcharges are being collected but are not being printed on physical tickets. A formal grievance has been submitted to railway authorities, but no resolution has been communicated so far.
Once the reservation system is updated, passengers are expected to be able to book reserved seats on the Double Decker Express directly from Tiruvallur, offering a faster alternative to suburban services for inter-city travel.
