Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a series of infrastructure projects worth INR 327 crore to improve basic amenities in jhuggi-jhopri (JJ) clusters across the city. The projects were launched during Republic Day events at the Chief Minister's residence, with senior officials and community representatives present.
Of the total sanctioned amount, work valued at INR 144 crore has already been awarded. The initiatives primarily focus on constructing public convenience complexes and upgrading lanes with cement concrete roads to address long-standing deficiencies in sanitation and urban infrastructure. A total of 476 public convenience works have been approved at INR 225 crore, with 214 projects worth INR 81 crore already under implementation. Additionally, 254 lane and road projects with a budget of INR 102 crore have been approved, and 172 contracts worth INR 63 crore have been awarded.
The Chief Minister highlighted that previous governments often neglected JJ residents, treating them as vote banks, whereas the current administration views the struggles of these communities as a priority. She emphasized the significant role JJ residents play in building the city and noted that the government's objective is to ensure benefits reach these communities directly.
The programme involved cabinet ministers, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, the CEO of DUSIB Rupesh Thakur, and several other senior officials. A notable feature was the active participation of women from JJ clusters. The CM personally invited representatives from the communities and shared a meal with them, reflecting efforts to engage residents in planning and oversight of these projects.
Officials pointed out that these initiatives form part of a broader strategy to improve housing, sanitation, and social welfare in informal settlements. By improving public amenities and infrastructure, the government aims to uplift living standards, strengthen civic participation, and ensure that these urban residents benefit from inclusive city development.
