Commuters on Mumbai's Central and Harbour local train lines have been facing ongoing delays, cancellations, and poor passenger information since the New Year, particularly on Kasara and Karjat routes. Passenger associations recently met senior Central Railway officials, demanding visible improvements in service and warning that officials should resign if trains do not run on time. Afternoon services and AC locals have been especially affected, with delays often exceeding 30 minutes. Commuters also noted that mail and express trains frequently receive priority, causing further inconvenience for daily travellers.
Passengers on Mumbai's Central and Harbour local train lines continue to experience frequent delays, cancellations, and insufficient passenger information. The worst disruptions have been reported on services towards Kasara and Karjat. Commuter associations recently met with senior officials, including the Chief Passenger Transportation Manager Dr Milind Hirwe and Senior Operations Manager Anant Sharma, to address these persistent issues and push for urgent improvements. They emphasised that on-time service must be visible on the tracks, not just promised on paper.
Afternoon trains have been particularly affected, resulting in overcrowding and difficulty for daily commuters. Passenger groups highlighted that unfinished infrastructure works place additional strain on the network, affecting millions of travellers every day. They told officials that maintaining punctuality is crucial and warned that failure to do so should result in leadership changes.
AC local services were also criticised. Commuters described the experience as paying more money to buy suffering, noting that these higher-fare services often run late. Delays commonly exceed 30 minutes, and mail and express trains frequently take precedence over locals, further disrupting the daily schedule.
Railway officials responded that infrastructure projects, such as the 15-coach local initiative aimed at increasing capacity, are ongoing in phases. While they acknowledged commuter concerns, they noted that improvements would require time to implement. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing capacity and addressing system bottlenecks, but passengers insist that punctuality must improve immediately to restore trust in the network.
