Synopsis

The widening of the 33km Chokak Ankali section of the Nagpur Ratnagiri National Highway is set to restart after land acquisition hurdles were cleared. A Gazette notification under the National Highways Act officially transferred the stretch to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), enabling construction to begin. District authorities confirmed that land evaluation will conclude shortly, and compensation will be paid within two months, following farmers demands for fair awards. This step addresses a major bottleneck that had stalled work for years, bringing the project closer to timely completion.

Land acquisition for the Chokak Ankali section of the Nagpur Ratnagiri National Highway has been formally completed, allowing stalled widening work to resume. A Gazette notification under Section 3 (3-D) of the National Highways Act was published, transferring the 33 km stretch from Chokak in Kolhapur to Ankali in Sangli to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). With the official transfer, construction work is expected to be completed within a year.

The delay in this section occurred because land acquisition was incomplete, despite progress on other segments of the Nagpur Ratnagiri corridor. The district administration and NHAI had been actively working to resolve these issues. Authorities confirmed that the land evaluation process will be completed shortly, after which the award will be announced. Compensation will be disbursed to landowners within the next two months, ensuring alignment with earlier acquisition practices.

Farmer representatives had raised concerns, requesting that compensation be consistent with other segments of the highway. On previous stretches covering more than 900 km, landowners had received up to four times the basic compensation rate. The administration's decision to meet these demands has helped resolve disputes that stalled construction for years.

The Chokak Ankali stretch is an important link in the 600 km Nagpur Ratnagiri corridor, connecting Vidarbha with the Konkan region. Once completed, the widened highway will improve transportation and support economic activity in western Maharashtra. This progress also ensures that construction can proceed without further administrative delays, providing clarity on timelines for residents and businesses along the route.

The overall Nagpur Ratnagiri highway project has seen about 25% completion across other sections. The clearing of land acquisition for this stretch addresses one of the most significant bottlenecks, enabling smoother execution of construction plans in the coming months.
