Through panel discussions, expert addresses and technology showcases, participants emphasised the need to shift from metro-centric, unchecked growth towards decentralised development, climate-responsive design, safety, sanitation infrastructure and deeper adoption of sustainability frameworks across the construction value chain.
The fifth edition of the Saifee Burhani Expo (Construction 360) brought together key stakeholders from the construction and real estate ecosystem in Mumbai, underscoring the urgent need for a transition from rapid, unplanned urbanisation to sustainable and inclusive development models. The three-day event served as a platform for dialogue on innovation, policy alignment and industry collaboration, with a strong focus on India's long-term development roadmap leading up to 2047.
Inaugurating the expo, Shri Rahul Narwekar highlighted the role of such industry platforms in strengthening collaboration across developers, manufacturers, suppliers and technology providers, while reinforcing Maharashtra's position as a hub for infrastructure-led growth. Multiple panel discussions addressed themes such as sustainable infrastructure planning, future-ready building materials and the evolution of urban design frameworks.
Industry leaders stressed that sustainability must move beyond intent to execution. Speakers pointed to the mounting pressure on metros like Mumbai due to daily migration, calling for decentralised development and region-led growth. Emphasis was placed on creating green cities rather than isolated green buildings, supported by integrated planning across transport, housing, sanitation and public infrastructure.
Technology and materials innovation emerged as key enablers, with discussions on passive building solutions, energy efficiency and the growing relevance of construction chemicals, adhesives and low-emission materials. Safety was highlighted as a core pillar of sustainable development, alongside environmental and social responsibility, with calls for safety to become an ingrained cultural practice rather than a regulatory obligation.
Sanitation infrastructure also featured prominently, with experts underlining the importance of water supply, wastewater treatment and solid waste management in ensuring long-term urban liveability. Climate-responsive design, lifecycle accountability and deep decarbonisation were identified as critical priorities for the coming decade, particularly as cities face increasing climate risks.
Featuring over 120 exhibitors from India and abroad, the expo showcased advanced construction technologies and reaffirmed the Dawoodi Bohra community's contribution to India's urban development. Overall, the event reinforced the sector's collective commitment to responsible growth, innovation and collaboration in shaping India's sustainable urban future.
