Hindustan Construction Company Ltd (HCC) has been awarded a INR 901 crore contract by the Northeast Frontier Railway for constructing New Tunnel 28 on the Tupul Imphal new broad gauge railway line. The work has been assigned to the HCC-VCCL Joint Venture, with HCC holding a 65% stake in the partnership.
The project includes the construction of a 3.5 kilometre main tunnel and encompasses comprehensive design, engineering, and commissioning responsibilities. The JV will design and proof-check a broad-gauge ballast-less track, followed by supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of all systems and structures necessary for smooth railway operations.
In addition to the tunnel, the contract covers the design, supply, erection, and commissioning of tunnel ventilation systems, complete electro-mechanical works, and construction of approach roads along with ancillary infrastructure for seamless project integration. These works are aimed at ensuring operational efficiency and safety for the new rail corridor.
HCC has not disclosed a specific timeline for completion. As of November 2025, transport projects constitute approximately 63% of the company's order book, which stands at INR 13,152 crore, highlighting HCC's strong focus on railway and transport infrastructure. This project aligns with Indian Railways broader push to improve connectivity in the northeast, a region where modern infrastructure is vital for regional development and mobility. HCC's proven experience in complex tunnelling projects has been a key factor in securing this assignment.
