The Ara-Sasaram rail line doubling project in western Bihar has entered the execution phase, with survey and land acquisition work accelerating in Bhojpur and Rohtas districts. The 110 km corridor, costing around INR 700 crore, aims to ease congestion on the busy Danapur Pt DDU line and improve passenger and freight operations. Joint surveys with district administrations are underway to speed up land handovers. Once completed, the project is expected to increase train frequency, reduce travel times, lower operational delays, and support regional economic growth through better connectivity and freight efficiency.
The long-awaited Ara-Sasaram rail line doubling initiative has now moved into an active execution phase, with survey and land acquisition work intensifying across Bhojpur and Rohtas districts. The project, covering nearly 110 km and costing around INR 700 crore, had received formal approval from the Ministry of Railways, and the tendering process has been completed. Preparatory groundwork is now underway as authorities aim to ensure timely progress.
Railway and district administration teams have launched a joint survey to expedite land measurement, route mapping, and identification of bottleneck areas. Officials highlighted that early completion of land acquisition is critical for smooth execution. A senior railway official from Ara mentioned that the joint survey with district officials is designed to ensure quick handover of land to the construction agency, which would significantly reduce potential delays.
According to Hajipur zone authorities, land surveys and measurements are ongoing, and full-scale construction, including track laying, will begin once these preparatory works are completed. The doubling is expected to relieve pressure on the heavily congested Danapur Pt DDU main line, which currently witnesses frequent delays due to high traffic density. Officials from Buxar noted that once the double line is operational, it will serve as an effective alternative corridor for both passenger and freight trains, increasing efficiency.
Currently, around six trains, including two express services, operate on the single-line section, often facing long waits at crossings. Freight operations, particularly coal transport for the Chausa Thermal Power Plant, are expected to become more efficient, reducing transportation time and costs. Railways anticipate a rise in revenue once seamless operations of heavy freight trains begin on the doubled line.
Post-doubling, authorities plan to increase train frequency and improve speed on the Ara-Sasaram route. This is expected to significantly cut travel time and reduce operational disruptions caused by crossings. Passengers in Bhojpur, Rohtas, and Kaimur districts stand to benefit from faster, more reliable travel, while regional industries and markets are likely to gain from improved connectivity. Local trade bodies have noted that better rail access will strengthen employment opportunities, small industries, and market reach, while residents expect travel costs to decrease and access to long-distance destinations to improve.
Railway officials confirmed that the Ara-Sasaram doubling project falls under the Pt DDU Division and that preparatory work is progressing as scheduled. Survey and land measurement are currently in progress, and construction activities will gain full momentum once this phase is complete. The project is targeted for completion within three years, reflecting a focused effort to modernize rail infrastructure in western Bihar and enhance regional connectivity.
