Titagarh Rail Systems has unveiled India's first driverless metro trainset for the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 project, manufactured at its Uttarpara facility in West Bengal with approximately 70-75% local content. The trainset will operate on the Yellow Line connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar and a branch of the Violet Line linking GNLU, Pandit Deendayal Energy University, and GIFT City. Equipped with a Train Control and Management System for automated operation and accessibility features for persons with reduced mobility, it highlights India's growing capability in modern urban rail manufacturing.
Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd has completed the assembly of India's first driverless trainset for the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 project at its passenger rail manufacturing facility in Uttarpara, West Bengal. The trainset has been developed for the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) and represents a significant step in domestic rail production.
The trainset contains roughly 70-75% local content, reflecting a focus on indigenous manufacturing in line with national initiatives. Gujarat's Chief Minister noted that the milestone strengthens India's self-reliance in rail transport and urban infrastructure development. He highlighted that the trainset demonstrates the country's ability to deliver advanced rail solutions while supporting local industry.
Phase 2 of the Ahmedabad Metro spans 28.26 km of elevated corridor with 22 stations. The new driverless trainsets will operate primarily on the Yellow Line between Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, covering about 23.8 km. They will also serve a branch of the Violet Line connecting Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Pandit Deendayal Energy University, and GIFT City over 5.4 km. These extensions aim to improve connectivity and facilitate faster, safer commutes in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar corridor.
Each trainset is equipped with a Train Control and Management System that enables fully unattended operations. Interiors are designed with designated spaces for persons with reduced mobility, ensuring accessibility and comfort for all passengers. The trainset also includes modern monitoring and safety systems that maintain efficient operations without manual intervention.
Officials from Titagarh Rail Systems stated that the delivery of a domestically manufactured driverless trainset highlights the growth of India's rail technology sector. The company also continues to manufacture other advanced rail projects, such as the Vande Bharat train sets, demonstrating its broader capability in both passenger and metro rail production.
The completion of this trainset aligns with Gujarat's efforts to modernize urban transport while boosting domestic manufacturing. By integrating advanced automated systems and local production, the project sets a benchmark for future metro expansions and emphasizes India's growing competence in building high-tech urban rail infrastructure.
