Residents along the Vamanjoor & Moodbidri stretch of NH 169 have urged the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to redesign service roads that are disrupting local movement. Elevated service roads, meant to separate highway traffic from local traffic, are blocking small crossroads, PWD links, and access to homes and shops. Steep slopes and soil accumulation have created additional obstacles, affecting relocated shops and daily commuters. A delegation submitted a memorandum requesting scientifically planned roads that ensure free movement for residents while maintaining highway efficiency and safety.
Residents along the Vamanjoor-Moodbidri section of NH 169 have highlighted challenges caused by the ongoing construction of elevated service roads. They said the roads, designed to support smooth highway traffic, are now blocking small crossroads and PWD roads, restricting access to homes, businesses, and public spaces.
Service roads are intended to allow local traffic to move freely without entering the main highway, where access points and U turns are constructed only at select locations to prevent sudden entry. However, the current design has led to steep slopes and soil accumulation at several points, making previously accessible cross roads difficult to use. Some crossroads have become so low relative to the elevated service roads that they risk being buried under soil, while shops and stalls constructed in compliance with earlier regulations are now vulnerable to being covered or obstructed.
Locals emphasized the need for service roads that are designed with scientific planning to ensure minimal disruption. The roads should facilitate free movement for residents while maintaining the safety and efficiency of the highway.
A delegation led by community members Rajesh Vamanjoor, Dinkar, Nitin Bangera, Manoj Kumar Vamanjoor, and Swathi S Vamanjoor submitted a memorandum to the NHAI project director. The group requested urgent attention to the issues, asking that service roads be built to suit local convenience, ensure smooth access to homes and shops, and prevent any inconvenience to daily commuters in Vamanjoor.
Officials overseeing the project are now expected to review the concerns and plan modifications that balance highway efficiency with community access. The residents intervention underscores the importance of integrating local needs into national infrastructure projects to prevent long-term disruptions.
