Synopsis

The Prime Minister has inaugurated the new terminal building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati, developed at a cost of around INR 4,000 crore as part of a broader INR 5,000 crore airport expansion programme. Designed as a nature-themed terminal, the facility reflects Assam's biodiversity and cultural heritage, with extensive use of greenery and bamboo-inspired elements. With an annual handling capacity of 13.1 million passengers, the terminal is expected to strengthen Guwahati's role as a key aviation hub for the Northeast and improve regional, national and international connectivity, including links to Southeast Asia.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati, marking a major milestone in Assam's aviation and infrastructure development. The terminal has been developed at an estimated cost of INR 4,000 crore, forming part of an overall INR 5,000 crore project that also includes investment earmarked for maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities.

The newly inaugurated terminal has been conceptualised as a nature-themed facility, drawing inspiration from Assam's natural heritage and cultural ethos. Spread across approximately 1,40,000 sq m, the building incorporates design elements inspired by the state's biodiversity, including landscapes reminiscent of Kaziranga and extensive use of bamboo, a material deeply embedded in Assam's traditional lifestyle.

With a passenger handling capacity of 13.1 million per annum, the terminal is expected to significantly enhance air traffic movement and operational efficiency at the airport. The project has been developed by Guwahati International Airport Ltd, with airport operations managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited.

During the inauguration, the Prime Minister toured the terminal, reviewed models showcasing its design features and interacted with workers involved in the construction. An 80-ft statue of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi, Assam's first chief minister, after whom the airport is named, was also unveiled.

The new terminal is expected to strengthen Guwahati's position as a key aviation hub for the Northeast, facilitate increased tourist inflow, improve access for pilgrims visiting the Kamakhya temple and enhance connectivity with Southeast Asia. The project is also seen as a catalyst for regional economic and industrial development while balancing modern infrastructure with cultural preservation.
