Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for a new brownfield ammonia-urea manufacturing plant at Namrup in Assam's Dibrugarh district, marking a major boost to the state's fertiliser and industrial infrastructure. Built with an investment of 10,601 crore, the project will come up within the existing Namrup fertiliser complex through a joint venture led by public sector and state-backed companies. The modern, energy-efficient facility will produce 12.7 lakh metric tonnes of urea annually and is expected to be operational by 2030. The project will support fertiliser supply across the Northeast and eastern India, while also driving regional industrial growth and employment.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation stone for a brownfield ammonia-urea manufacturing facility at Namrup in Dibrugarh district, marking a major expansion of fertiliser infrastructure in Assam. The project involves an estimated capital outlay of INR 10,601 crore and will be developed within the existing fertiliser complex at Namrup.
The upcoming facility will be implemented by Assam Valley Fertiliser and Chemical Company Ltd, a joint venture involving the Assam government, Oil India, National Fertilisers Ltd, Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Ltd and Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Ltd. The project had received approval earlier this year, following the incorporation of the joint venture entity at Namrup during the past few months.
Designed as a modern and energy-efficient fertiliser complex, the plant will have an annual urea production capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tonnes. The facility is targeted for commissioning by 2030 and is expected to play a key role in meeting fertiliser demand across Assam, the wider northeast, as well as parts of eastern and northern India.
Beyond fertiliser production, the project is expected to support industrial development and employment generation in the region, creating a significant number of direct and indirect jobs. The initiative also signals the revival of Namrup's legacy as a hub of India's gas-based fertiliser industry.
The foundation ceremony was attended by senior state leadership and officials, underscoring the strategic importance of the project for Assam's industrial and agricultural ecosystem. The existing fertiliser units at Namrup have historically played a crucial role in supplying urea produced from domestically available natural gas, supporting farmers and regional food security.
