Synopsis

The Trichy Corporation has approved INR 6.2 crore to construct a satellite bus terminus at Thiruverumbur along the Trichy Thanjavur National Highway, aiming to reduce congestion and streamline bus operations. The civic body has already paid INR 2.5 crore to acquire nearly one acre of land for the facility, which will include bus bays and a commercial complex. Currently, around 500 city and mofussil buses operate on narrow service roads in the area. The tender has been issued to ensure construction begins before election code restrictions come into effect, supporting smoother transit for commuters.

The Trichy Corporation has sanctioned INR 6.2 crore for a new satellite bus terminus at Thiruverumbur near the Trichy Thanjavur National Highway, designed to address congestion and improve the efficiency of bus operations along this busy corridor.

To facilitate the project, the corporation has already paid INR 2.5 crore to the district administration to acquire almost an acre of land at the site of the former Thiruverumbur old panchayat union office campus. The civic body has issued a tender to select a contractor so that construction can start before the model code of conduct for the upcoming assembly elections is enforced.

The new terminus will become the city's fifth bus terminus and the second designated as a satellite hub after the Srirangam facility. It will feature multiple bus bays to handle the flow of vehicles and a commercial complex to serve passengers and nearby residents. This design aims to relieve the congestion caused by buses currently stopping on narrow service roads along the highway, which is used by roughly 500 daily city and mofussil bus services.

Officials pointed out that relocating bus operations to a dedicated terminus will free up highway space, improve traffic flow, and enhance safety for both commuters and motorists. The facility is expected to benefit residents of five newly added city wards as well as nearby villages, supporting growing commuter demand in the area.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by Trichy Corporation to strengthen public transport infrastructure across the city. Previous plans have highlighted the need for additional satellite termini, including locations like Thuvakudi, to manage increasing transit requirements and provide smoother connectivity for intercity and local travel.
