Synopsis

Tata Power has invested INR 64 crore in Khorlochhu Hydro Power Limited, marking the third tranche of its planned equity investment in the Bhutan-based hydropower company. The investment forms part of a broader agreement to acquire a 40 per cent stake in the project, with the total proposed investment standing at around INR 830 crore. The move aligns with Tata Power's strategy to strengthen its clean energy portfolio beyond India, while continuing to expand across multiple power generation segments.

Tata Power has infused INR 64 crore into Khorlochhu Hydro Power Limited (KHPL), a Bhutan-based hydropower company, as part of its ongoing plan to acquire a 40 per cent equity stake in the entity. The investment was disclosed through a regulatory filing made during the past week.

The company had entered into a share purchase agreement in October 2024 to acquire the stake in KHPL through one or more tranches. The latest infusion represents the third tranche under this arrangement. Through this investment, Tata Power has subscribed to 6.4 million equity shares with a face value of INR 100 each.

With this tranche, Tata Power has continued progress toward its total proposed investment of approximately INR 830 crore in the Bhutanese hydropower project. KHPL is engaged in developing hydroelectric assets in Bhutan, a country that has long partnered with Indian companies for cross-border power generation and supply. Indian utilities have historically viewed Bhutan's hydropower potential as strategically important due to stable policy support and long-term power offtake arrangements.

Tata Power Company Ltd currently operates an installed capacity of 15.9 GW across thermal, solar, wind, and hydro segments, making it one of India's largest integrated power producers. In recent years, the company has increased its focus on clean and renewable energy, including international assets, as part of its transition strategy.

Alongside its renewable push, Tata Power has also indicated plans to diversify into nuclear energy in the future. The company has stated that it intends to explore small modular reactor projects with capacities ranging between 20 MW and 50 MW, subject to legal amendments that would allow private sector participation in the nuclear power space.
