Indore is advancing a comprehensive housing initiative to achieve slum-free status within five years. The city plans to construct over 16,000 multi-storey homes in the next three years under PMAY 2.0, as part of a larger goal of 1.5 lakh houses. The project covers flats built by the municipal corporation, rental housing, and homes supported by individual subsidies. Strategically chosen sites and submitted DPRs aim to relocate slum residents, removing encroachments that impede development projects and Master Plan roads, reinforcing the city's commitment to organized urban growth.
Indore's civic authorities and the state government are undertaking a major urban housing initiative aimed at eliminating slums within five years. This program focuses on relocating residents from informal settlements into structured housing, while simultaneously clearing encroachments that currently hinder ongoing infrastructure works and the completion of Master Plan roads.
The initiative is being executed under the central government's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) 2.0. In the first phase, more than 16,000 multi-storey flats will be constructed over the next three years. This phase forms part of a broader plan to develop around 1.5 lakh pucca houses across the city. Indore Smart City Development Limited (ISCDL) CEO Arth Jain explained that the housing program is divided into three categories: flats constructed by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), affordable rental housing for tenants, and support for individuals building their own homes with financial assistance or subsidies under PMAY eligibility.
Ten strategic locations have been earmarked for the multi-storey buildings, and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for five of these sites have already been submitted to the government. The estimated cost for this phase is around INR 2,200 crore. The apartments are specifically designed for residents currently living in slums, ensuring proper rehabilitation and integration into the formal housing framework.
This housing project builds on Indore's previous urban development efforts, including smart city initiatives and earlier slum redevelopment plans. The city has consistently ranked high in national cleanliness surveys, reflecting its wider focus on urban quality of life improvements. By providing structured housing options and addressing encroachments, the city aims to remove barriers that slow down infrastructure and road projects while ensuring inclusive urban development.
