Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated eight major rail road projects in Vidarbha as part of a wider set of 12 works costing INR 609 crore. These include four Road Over Bridges (RoBs), three Road Under Bridges (RuBs), and the long-awaited 1,372 metre Lakadganj flyover in Nagpur. The projects aim to eliminate level crossings, reduce traffic congestion, enhance commuter safety, and ensure smoother travel. Built jointly by the Ministry of Railways and Maharashtra government under a 50:50 cost sharing model, the works are expected to support regional mobility and economic growth.
Vidarbha has witnessed a significant infrastructure push as Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated eight important rail road projects designed to ease traffic and improve connectivity in the region. This inauguration was part of a larger event marking the opening of 12 rail road works constructed at a combined cost of INR 609 crore by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (MahaRail). These projects, executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways, are expected to benefit both daily commuters and freight traffic.
The projects include four Road Over Bridges (RoBs) at Katol, Kalamna, Tirora, and Sakharwahi, three Road Under Bridges (RuBs) in Chandrapur and Amravati districts, and the much-awaited Lakadganj flyover in east Nagpur. These structures aim to replace hazardous level crossings, reduce waiting time for vehicles at railway intersections, improve road safety, and enhance overall travel efficiency.
The Lakadganj flyover, 1,372 metres long and built at a cost of INR 135 crore, was inaugurated as the central highlight. Funded by the Maharashtra Urban Development Department, it is expected to significantly reduce commuter delays on the busy Old Bhandara Road corridor. Several state ministers, including Devendra Fadnavis, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Shivendraraje Bhosale, and Ashish Jaiswal, were present at the ceremony.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted that the state currently has 524 railway level crossings. Of these, 240 RoBs are being built by the railways, 73 by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and the remaining 211 by MahaRail. He noted that around 80 locations, including 13 in Nagpur, face heavy traffic congestion as residential and commercial areas are located on both sides of railway tracks, making level crossings hazardous. Fadnavis emphasized the state government’s commitment to eliminating all level crossings in Maharashtra.
The RoBs and RuBs inaugurated in Vidarbha have been constructed to strengthen commuter safety, reduce the risk of accidents, and ensure uninterrupted movement of vehicles. MahaRail’s managing director mentioned that the subways are equipped with modern drainage and protective systems to prevent waterlogging, especially during heavy rains, ensuring durability and safety for users.
The projects were implemented under a 50:50 cost sharing model between the Ministry of Railways and the Maharashtra government. This collaboration not only addresses long-standing infrastructure gaps but also aims to enhance regional connectivity and mobility. By reducing waiting times and improving road safety, the works are expected to support economic activity in Vidarbha and create smoother transit for both passengers and freight vehicles.
