Synopsis

Bengaluru's Namma Metro Pink Line is approaching operational readiness as the first six coach prototype train from BEML arrives for testing. Under a INR 3,000 crore contract, BEML is supplying 318 standard-gauge metro cars for the Pink and Blue Lines, along with 15 years of maintenance support. Initial oscillation and safety trials will ensure the train's stability at higher speeds, with approvals required from the Ministry of Railways, RDSO, and the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety. The elevated 7.5 km section may open by May 2026, while the remaining 13 km underground stretch is expected by the end of 2026.

Bengaluru's Namma Metro Pink Line is preparing for testing as the first prototype train built by BEML has reached the city. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) confirmed that the six coach trainset will be delivered this week, after which rigorous testing will commence ahead of the phased commissioning scheduled for 2026.

The prototype train, initially expected by mid October, was completed in December and will undergo multiple trials before entering service. A BMRCL official said the process includes approvals from the Ministry of Railways, the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), and the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) to ensure safety standards are fully met.

Testing will start with oscillation trials conducted by a specialised team from Lucknow. These trials will run over a minimum 5 km track and cover straight and curved sections, assessing factors like derailment coefficients and off-loading. Trains will be tested at speeds 10% higher than the planned operational limits to verify safety under extreme conditions. Following these trials, reports will be submitted to the Railway Board, and final authorisation from CMRS will be sought before the line is commissioned.

Under the INR 3,000 crore agreement, BEML will provide 318 standard-gauge metro cars for the Pink and Blue Lines, built at its Bengaluru facility. The contract also includes maintenance support for up to 15 years. These trains are designed for communication-based train control (CBTC), enabling fully driverless operations, which is a significant upgrade for the city's metro network.

The Pink Line has faced several delays, but progress has accelerated with the prototype's arrival. The elevated 7.5 km stretch from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere is targeted for May 2026. The remaining 13 km underground section from Dairy Circle to Nagawara will undergo more complex testing and tunnelling work, aiming for completion and commissioning by the end of 2026.
