Synopsis

Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) recently demolished 350 dwellings near Dashama Pond in Gorwa, acting on a request from the Gujarat Housing Board (GHB). The two-day operation cleared makeshift homes primarily occupied by labourers, who were previously asked to relocate. GHB plans to develop a housing scheme on the reclaimed land but lacked the manpower and machinery to remove encroachments on its own. The demolition aligns with the city's ongoing efforts to reclaim public and reserved land for structured development and addresses issues of unregulated settlements in urban areas.

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation carried out a demolition drive in Gorwa to remove 350 dwellings situated near Dashama Pond. The operation, conducted over two days, began with the clearing of around 200 structures, followed by the removal of the remaining 150. The drive targeted informal shanties mostly occupied by labourers. Residents were given prior notice to vacate the area. While there was initial hesitation from some residents, they eventually complied and relocated from the site.

The Gujarat Housing Board had sought assistance from VMC because it does not have the required machinery or workforce to remove encroachments independently. The cleared site is earmarked for a housing scheme, reflecting the board's plan to repurpose the land for organized development.

Authorities emphasized that the demolition is part of a broader strategy to reclaim public and reserved land in Vadodara. Earlier this year, similar drives targeted unauthorized constructions in various city areas to improve urban infrastructure and ensure planned land use. The operation near Dashama Pond highlights the continuing challenge of balancing urban development with informal settlements that have emerged over time.

The civic body coordinated closely with GHB to ensure the removal was orderly, minimizing conflict and disruption. The reclaimed land will provide a foundation for the upcoming housing project, which aims to offer structured and legal housing options in place of informal settlements. This approach is consistent with efforts across Gujarat to transform encroached urban areas into usable land for planned development.
