Synopsis

The National Highways Authority of India has set four Guinness World Records during construction of the Bengaluru-Kadapa-Vijayawada Economic Corridor on NH 544G, highlighting rapid progress in highway development. The records include the longest continuous bituminous concrete paving and the highest quantity laid in a single day, achieved near Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh. Additional milestones were set for large-scale continuous paving across multiple packages of the project. The 343-kilometre, six-lane access-controlled corridor will feature interchanges, wayside amenities, and a major tunnel, and is expected to cut travel time while boosting logistics, trade, and regional connectivity between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, supporting broader economic and real estate growth along the route.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has set four Guinness World Records during the construction of the Bengaluru-Kadapa-Vijayawada Economic Corridor on National Highway 544G, marking a significant milestone in India's highway development programme.

According to NHAI, two records were achieved on January 6 near Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh. The first record was for the longest continuous laying of bituminous concrete, covering 28.89 lane kilometres. This was achieved by paving a three-lane-wide stretch measuring 9.63 kilometres within 24 hours. The second record was for laying the highest quantity of bituminous concrete in a single day, amounting to 10,655 metric tonnes in 24 hours.

NHAI stated that both achievements were recorded for the first time globally under a six-lane national highway project. These milestones were completed as part of the ongoing construction work on the Bengaluru-Kadapa-Vijayawada Economic Corridor, which is being developed as an access-controlled expressway.

Building on this progress, NHAI achieved two more Guinness World Records on January 11. The third record was set for the continuous laying of 57,500 metric tonnes of bituminous concrete. The fourth record was for continuous paving of 156 lane kilometres, achieved by completing a three-lane-wide stretch spanning 52 kilometres. This effort surpassed the earlier world record of 84.4 lane kilometres, which involved a two-lane-wide section measuring 42.2 kilometres.

The record-setting construction activities were carried out across Package-2 and Package-3 of the economic corridor. NHAI said the achievements demonstrate improved project planning, use of modern construction technology, and coordinated execution across multiple work fronts.

The Bengaluru-Kadapa-Vijayawada Economic Corridor is a 343-kilometre-long, six-lane highway designed to support high-speed and safe travel. The corridor includes 17 interchanges and 10 wayside amenities to improve commuter convenience. A key engineering feature of the project is a tunnel measuring 5.3 kilometres in length. Additionally, around 21 kilometres of the highway pass through forest areas, requiring careful construction planning and environmental management.

Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh while improving connectivity to key urban and industrial centres. The project is also expected to support logistics movement, regional trade, and economic development along its alignment.

Large-scale highway projects such as this corridor play a critical role in shaping regional growth by improving access to markets, industrial zones, and emerging urban clusters. Enhanced road infrastructure often leads to increased demand for industrial land, logistics parks, warehousing, and residential development in adjoining areas.

NHAI said the series of Guinness World Records reflects the authority's focus on faster execution and improved construction standards. The achievements highlight India's growing capability to deliver complex infrastructure projects at scale while adhering to global benchmarks for efficiency and execution.
