Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has underlined the importance of ongoing cooperation between the central government and state administrations to advance reforms in the transport sector. Speaking at the annual meeting of transport ministers and secretaries from all states and Union Territories in New Delhi, he noted that transport being a concurrent subject requires consistent dialogue to ensure uniform policy implementation across regions.
The discussions followed a two day workshop at Bharat Mandapam, attended by transport secretaries on the first day and ministers on the second. The sessions focused on aligning priorities in road transport, improving safety measures, and adopting best practices from various states. Officials and industry representatives, including members from the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) and the Bus Operators Confederation of India (BOCI), shared insights on sectoral challenges and solutions.
Digitisation of transport services was a major focus. Officials reviewed efforts to improve the Vahan and Sarathi platforms, aiming to reduce citizens need to visit offices physically. Discussions also included enhancing data quality and developing frameworks for sharing vehicle registration and driving licence information. Strengthening accident reporting systems, including the e-DAR single accident reporting platform, and introducing cashless treatment schemes for road accident victims were highlighted as critical steps to improve post crash care.
Proposed amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act were also discussed to simplify regulations and improve road safety. Other key topics included modernising driver training infrastructure, setting up district-level safety initiatives, expanding vehicle scrapping facilities, updating emissions norms under PUCC 2.0, and reinforcing vehicular safety standards. Gadkari emphasised that these reforms require cohesive action between the Centre and states to ensure better service delivery, safer roads, and efficient transport management.
The meeting highlighted that continuous collaboration, structured consultations, and follow-up mechanisms are essential to translate policy discussions into practical improvements in citizens everyday experience on roads.
