The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its monitoring and safety measures to ensure the supply of clean and safe drinking water across the city, following recent concerns arising from a water contamination incident in Indore. Leveraging its own Morbe Dam project, Navi Mumbai continues to be recognised as a water-secure city, with regular testing and quality checks already in place. However, in view of potential risks arising from the proximity of water and sewage pipelines, NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has directed officials to adopt additional precautionary measures. The civic body has initiated end-to-end inspections of the water supply system, from source to consumer, with special focus on vulnerable residential areas, to maintain strict adherence to water quality standards.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has undertaken enhanced precautionary measures to ensure uninterrupted supply of clean and safe drinking water to residents, in the wake of a recent water contamination incident reported in Indore. Navi Mumbai, which draws its water from the municipally owned Morbe Dam project, is widely regarded as a water-sufficient city and has consistently maintained high standards of drinking water quality through regular monitoring and testing.
Despite these safeguards, NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has instructed the Public Health Engineering Department to exercise heightened caution across all stages of water management. The directive comes amid concerns that accidental contamination can occur in areas where drinking water pipelines run close to sewage lines. To mitigate any such risks, the civic administration has been asked to immediately implement additional preventive measures throughout the water collection, storage and distribution network.
Following these instructions, Additional City Engineer (Civil) Arvind Shinde convened an urgent meeting of all concerned municipal engineers and contractors. During the meeting, officials were directed to carry out comprehensive inspections starting from the Morbe Dam reservoir, extending to the Bhokarpada Water Treatment Plant, main water pipelines, pumping stations and the entire distribution system, right up to the last consumer connection. The inspection drive has already commenced across the municipal area.
Special attention is being given to densely populated zones, including village settlements, low- and middle-income housing clusters and slum areas, where the risk of infrastructure stress and contamination is relatively higher. Officials have been instructed to intensify daily preventive checks and routine inspections in these areas. Clear accountability has also been fixed by defining responsibilities at each operational level to ensure consistent compliance with prescribed water quality standards.
NMMC has reiterated its commitment to providing residents with clean and safe drinking water. In the backdrop of the Indore incident, the civic body is carrying out a thorough review of the entire water distribution system from source to end user and implementing necessary improvements wherever required. The municipal administration has emphasised that maintaining public health and water safety remains a top priority and that vigilance will continue to be strengthened across the city.
