Synopsis

The central government recently launched infrastructure and digital projects worth INR 235 crore at Chennai Port Authority and Kamarajar Port Limited, aimed at strengthening port safety, resilience, and operational efficiency. Investments include coastal protection, modern firefighting systems, hospital upgrades, and an integrated digital platform at Chennai Port. At Kamarajar Port, access control and breakwater rehabilitation were prioritised following past cyclone damage. A nationwide e-port clearance portal was also introduced to simplify certificate issuance for vessels. The projects reflect ongoing efforts to modernise India's ports and improve maritime logistics.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal recently inaugurated several infrastructure and digital projects at Chennai Port Authority and Kamarajar Port Limited, representing a total investment of INR 235 crore. These initiatives are intended to strengthen port resilience, enhance safety, and improve operational efficiency, while supporting ease of doing business for shipping companies and stakeholders.

At Chennai Port Authority, projects costing INR 129.36 crore focus on improving safety, public service delivery, and infrastructure resilience. Work includes repairing and strengthening the coastal revetment behind the Coastal Berth over an approximately 850 metre stretch using climate resilient techniques at a cost of INR 33.28 crore. A new high-capacity firefighting pump house is being built at the Oil Dock Area for INR 43 crore to meet Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD) standards and ensure protection of critical energy infrastructure. The port hospital is also being modernised with INR 8.08 crore, which includes upgrades to wards, operation theatres, and diagnostic facilities to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services for staff and stakeholders.

In addition, the minister inaugurated an Enterprise Business System, developed at INR 45 crore. This SAP-based digital platform integrates finance, port operations, human resources, asset management, procurement, and customer service on a single system. The platform is expected to improve operational efficiency, compliance, and transparency in port processes.

At Kamarajar Port Limited, projects totalling INR 105.64 crore include construction of a new boundary wall at the north-west side connecting the Northern Port Access Road at a cost of INR 1.39 crore. This will enhance access control and facilitate smoother logistics operations. The rehabilitated Northern Breakwater Head, rebuilt at INR 105 crore after past cyclone damage, was also inaugurated. The 202-metre structure has been reinforced with over 3,000 tetrapods to maintain navigational safety and support uninterrupted port operations.

The minister also launched a nationwide e-port clearance portal under the One Nation One Port Process. This portal enables online submission and issuance of port clearance certificates, including advance clearances for vessels. The tool aims to reduce turnaround times and make port operations more predictable and efficient across India.

Sonowal additionally handed over funds to the Royal Madras Yacht Club to support sailing training for students from the Chennai Port School, reinforcing skills development in maritime education.
