Vazhayila–Nedumangad four-lane road project faces further delay after phase II contract cancellation

Synopsis

The Vazhayila Nedumangad four-lane road project has encountered another delay after the Kerala Road Fund Board cancelled the phase II contract due to the contractor's failure to submit the mandatory bank guarantee within the stipulated time. The affected stretch, connecting Karakulam and Valicode, had already seen most land acquisition completed, with compensation largely paid. Authorities have decided to re-tender the work, with bids expected to open shortly. While phase I construction continues, the setback is likely to slow the overall timeline of this key suburban road upgrade.

The four-lane development of the Vazhayila Nedumangad Road has been delayed once again following the cancellation of the phase II contract by the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB). The decision was taken after the selected contractor failed to submit the required bank guarantee even after being granted additional time, leading authorities to scrap the contract and initiate a fresh tendering process.

Phase II of the project covers the stretch between Karakulam and Valicode. Nearly 95% of the land required for this section has already been acquired, and compensation has been paid to most affected landowners. Despite these clearances, construction could not begin due to the contractual lapse, forcing KRFB to re-float the tender. Officials have indicated that bids for the new contract are expected to open shortly, allowing the project to move forward once a new contractor is finalised.

Construction work under phase I, which spans from Vazhayila to Karakulam, is progressing independently. This segment includes the Karakulam flyover, a key structure intended to ease congestion in the area. The first layer of tarring on the 1.5-km road connected to the flyover is expected to commence soon, offering partial relief to daily commuters who rely on this corridor.

The road widening project is being executed by KRFB with financial support from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board. Once completed, the 12-km stretch will be upgraded into a four-lane road with a width of around 21 metres, replacing the existing narrow road that has long been associated with traffic congestion and safety concerns.

Planning and compensation processes for phase III, which extends from Valicode to Pazhakutti in Nedumangad, are still underway. Authorities maintain that completing all three phases is critical to improving connectivity between Thiruvananthapuram's eastern suburbs and Nedumangad, a route that serves both daily commuters and regional traffic.
