Following the recent civic elections in Mumbai, a major section of Veera Desai Road in Andheri West will be closed to regular traffic to allow demolition and reconstruction of a worn-out bridge over Mogra Nala at Dhake Colony. Traffic authorities have provided alternate routes, diverting southbound vehicles via Court Yard, Chitrakoot Junction, and New Link Road, while vehicles from JP Road will also use New Link Road. Residents have expressed concern about potential congestion, recalling earlier partial closures, and authorities have urged commuters to follow the diversion plan until the bridge work is complete.
Traffic officials have confirmed that a key segment of Veera Desai Road, between Gopinath Munde Garden and Garden Court in Andheri West, will be fully closed to all regular vehicles after the city's civic polls. The closure has been planned to allow the demolition and rebuilding of a dilapidated bridge over Mogra Nala at Dhake Colony, which falls under the Oshiwara Traffic Division. During the closure, southbound vehicles will be rerouted via Court Yard Junction, Chitrakoot Junction, and New Link Road, while vehicles approaching from JP Road will also be diverted onto New Link Road before reaching Veera Desai Road. Traffic authorities stressed that this arrangement is temporary and will remain in place until the bridge is fully reconstructed and safe for use.
Officials noted that the timing of the closure immediately after the civic elections was deliberate, as election-related movements of EVMs and other equipment have recently ended along this route. The bridge, which has shown signs of wear and structural weakness, requires complete demolition and reconstruction rather than patchwork repairs. Authorities confirmed that work will continue continuously to minimize the total disruption period.
Local residents and citizen groups have raised concerns about the closure, highlighting that Veera Desai Road is a heavily used arterial road connecting various suburbs. They referred to previous closures for construction work on the same stretch, which led to traffic congestion and delays. Residents have urged civic authorities to complete the project quickly to reduce inconvenience and ensure that emergency services can move efficiently.
Traffic police have requested commuters to plan their routes in advance and use the alternate paths provided. They emphasized that the diversion plan has been designed to maintain traffic flow as much as possible while keeping the construction area secure. Authorities will also monitor the diversion continuously to address any congestion points quickly.
The bridge reconstruction project has been a long-standing requirement, as previous minor repairs had not addressed underlying structural issues. Civic officials are coordinating closely with traffic authorities to ensure that construction proceeds efficiently, with minimal risks to residents and commuters. Public advisories and updates are expected to be shared regularly to inform citizens about progress and timelines.
