Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin is set to lay the foundation for a major redevelopment of the Broadway bus stand in Chennai under the North Chennai Development Scheme. The INR 800 crore project will replace the 75 year old facility with a modern multi modal transport hub featuring 73 bus bays capable of handling about 466 bus movements per hour. Temporary terminals at Royapuram and Island Grounds are in place to ensure uninterrupted services. The hub aims to improve daily commuting for thousands, while the project integrates accessible amenities and is supported by multiple government departments.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced the redevelopment of the Broadway bus stand in Chennai into a state-of-the-art multi-modal transport hub with an estimated cost of INR 800 crore. Chief Minister M K Stalin is scheduled to lay the foundation later this month, marking the start of construction under the North Chennai Development Scheme. The project seeks to replace the 75-year-old facility with a modern hub designed to handle a growing number of daily commuters efficiently.
The new hub will include 73 bus bays and is planned to manage around 466 bus movements per hour, which is expected to ease congestion significantly. The facility will serve thousands of daily commuters, including office-goers, students, and local workers, improving connectivity in north Chennai. The design incorporates passenger-friendly features such as spacious seating areas, ramps for persons with disabilities, dedicated breastfeeding rooms, clean toilet blocks, drinking water stations, paved access roads, two-wheeler parking, and adequate street lighting.
To maintain continuous bus operations during redevelopment, temporary terminals have been established at Royapuram and Island Grounds. The Royapuram interim facility is expected to manage nearly 2,000 bus trips daily, serving around 40,000 passengers, while the Island Grounds setup will complement this capacity. Officials have emphasised the importance of maintaining service efficiency and commuter safety throughout the construction period.
Funding for the multi-modal hub will come jointly from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, the Greater Chennai Corporation, and other supporting government departments. Authorities have also instructed project teams to prioritise safety, accessibility, and readiness of the facility.
Alongside the transport hub redevelopment, civic improvement projects are ongoing in the region. HR&CE Minister P K Sekarbabu recently inspected work at Villivakkam lake, a community hall at SIDCO Nagar costing INR 6.75 crore, and urban primary health centres and ward offices in Kolathur with a combined expenditure exceeding INR 18 crore. These efforts reflect a coordinated approach to improving public infrastructure and neighbourhood amenities.
