Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd has secured approval to invest INR 6,675 crore in a 10 GW ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. The project, cleared by the State Investment Promotion Board, will be the largest of its kind in India and will be developed at the IFFCO Kisan Special Economic Zone on 200 acres of land. The facility will support domestic solar manufacturing, create around 1,000 direct jobs, and be powered partly by a 200 MW captive green power plant.
Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) has received approval to set up a greenfield 10 GW ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, involving an investment of INR 6,675 crore. The project is expected to become the largest ingot and wafer manufacturing unit in India and is seen as a major addition to the country's solar manufacturing capacity.
The proposal was cleared by the State Investment Promotion Board chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, marking a significant step in Andhra Pradesh's efforts to attract large-scale clean energy investments. State officials noted that the project further strengthens the state's position as a growing hub for advanced solar manufacturing.
The facility will come up within the IFFCO Kisan Special Economic Zone. The state government has allocated 200 acres for the project, with 120 acres earmarked for the first phase and the remaining 80 acres reserved for future expansion. This phased approach allows room for capacity enhancement as demand for solar components increases.
Ingots and wafers produced at the plant are key inputs for solar cells and modules, and also have applications in the semiconductor sector. The project aligns with the central government's broader push to expand domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports for critical and strategic components, especially in the renewable energy value chain.
The investment is expected to generate around 1,000 direct jobs, apart from substantial indirect employment during the construction phase and through supporting industries. As part of its clean energy strategy, TPREL will also set up a 200 MW captive green power plant to meet the facility's energy requirements through renewable sources.
According to state officials, factors such as readily available industrial land, strong infrastructure, proximity to ports, and assured access to green power played a key role in attracting the project to Andhra Pradesh. Nellore, in particular, has been drawing interest from several renewable energy companies and is gradually emerging as a solar manufacturing cluster.
Welcoming the development, IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh said the investment reflects strong confidence in the state's policy stability, infrastructure readiness, and focus on clean energy manufacturing. He added that the project would help create skilled employment, deepen the solar manufacturing ecosystem, and support India's broader energy transition goals.
This marks TPREL's first manufacturing investment in Andhra Pradesh under its wider renewable energy expansion plans. The state government reiterated its commitment to facilitating world-class manufacturing through faster approvals, plug-and-play infrastructure, and a pro-industry policy environment.
