India's first hydrogen-powered train is nearing commissioning, with preparations underway for a pilot run on the Jind Sonipat section in Haryana under Northern Railway. The hydrogen trainset has been manufactured as per RDSO specifications, while a dedicated hydrogen production and storage facility at Jind is close to readiness. The project includes assured power supply arrangements and administrative reviews at the state level. This pilot marks an important step in Indian Railways efforts to test hydrogen traction as a cleaner alternative on select routes.
India's first hydrogen-powered train project has reached an advanced stage, with Indian Railways preparing for a pilot run on the Jind Sonipat route in Haryana. The initiative is being executed by Northern Railway and is intended to demonstrate the operational viability of hydrogen-powered rail traction in India.
The hydrogen trainset has already been manufactured and developed in line with the specifications laid down by the Research, Design and Standards Organisation. Alongside the rolling stock, a dedicated hydrogen production, storage and dispensing facility has been set up at Jind. The plant has a storage capacity of around 3,000 kg of hydrogen and is designed to supply fuel for the pilot operations.
Hydrogen for the project will be produced through electrolysis, aligning the initiative with India's broader push for green hydrogen and lower-emission transport solutions. To ensure uninterrupted operations, a dedicated 11 kV power supply has been arranged for the hydrogen plant. Officials have also been instructed to maintain backup systems and regularly review power availability to avoid disruptions during the pilot phase.
The project has seen close coordination between Indian Railways and the Haryana government. Senior state officials have reviewed the power and infrastructure readiness linked to the hydrogen facility, underlining the importance of smooth commissioning and stable utility support.
The pilot run on the Jind Sonipat section is expected to serve as a test case for hydrogen-powered trains in the country. Indian Railways has positioned this initiative as an exploratory step, particularly relevant for routes where full electrification may not be immediately feasible. The outcome of the pilot is expected to guide future decisions on the deployment of hydrogen-based traction across other suitable rail sections.
