Synopsis

National Road Safety Month is being observed across India as a Zero Fatality Month, with authorities focusing on reducing road accidents and fatalities. Transport and police departments, in coordination with agencies like the SaveLIFE Foundation, are conducting awareness drives and safety inspections. Activities include educating long-distance drivers on fatigue management, promoting reflector use during foggy conditions, and surveying over 266 crash-prone locations in Kanpur Nagar. Authorities are also addressing black spots and new high-risk areas, reflecting a nationwide effort to improve road safety and responsible driving habits.

National Road Safety Month is being observed this January as a Zero Fatality Month, following directives from state authorities including Uttar Pradesh's Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The initiative is designed to reduce traffic accidents and enhance safety across highways and urban roads.

In Kanpur Nagar, the transport department carried out targeted awareness and enforcement activities. Long-distance vehicle drivers were advised to operate only after adequate rest to prevent accidents caused by fatigue and drowsiness. With dense winter fog affecting visibility, drivers were also encouraged to affix reflector tapes on the front and rear of their vehicles and follow other necessary safety measures to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

Alongside awareness efforts, officials from the Public Works Department and other relevant agencies, guided by an action plan from the SaveLIFE Foundation, conducted surveys to identify and plan corrective measures for high-risk locations. This covered 266 critical crash-prone spots in the district, including 17 previously known black spots and 12 newly identified ones. The exercise aims to prioritise remedial work and reduce accident risk in these areas.

Other regions are conducting similar initiatives. Local administrations are working closely with police and transport departments to engage the public, promote responsible driving, and conduct enforcement drives. Campaigns emphasize adherence to traffic rules, better road infrastructure, and proactive identification of hazardous spots. Authorities are using these efforts to raise awareness among drivers and road users, reflecting a sustained push toward reducing fatalities nationwide.
