Synopsis

Chamarajanagar railway station in Karnataka is undergoing redevelopment under the central government's Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with work expected to be completed by February. The INR 24 crore project is nearly 90% complete, with civil, electrical, and structural work mostly done. Upgrades include extended platforms for 24 coach trains, separate waiting rooms, a reservation area, a cafeteria, improved signage, widened approach roads, and dedicated parking facilities. The redevelopment aims to improve passenger experience, strengthen connectivity in the border district, reduce congestion at nearby stations, and support local economic and tourism activities.

The redevelopment of Chamarajanagar railway station, being carried out under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, is slated to be finished by February. South Western Railway (SWR) officials have urged the executing agency to complete the remaining tasks on schedule. The total project cost is INR 24 crore, and officials from the Mysuru Division have inspected the site to ensure timely execution. Work has been progressing in two phases, each costing INR 12 crore.

Civil and electrical works have reached around 90% completion. Platform extensions on both sides now allow the station to accommodate two 24 coach trains simultaneously. Separate waiting rooms with toilets for men and women, a reservation area with an expanded concourse, a cafeteria, and a catering stall have been constructed. Coach guidance display boards, modern signage, and upgraded station facades have been added to enhance passenger convenience.

The approach roads to the station have been widened, and dedicated parking areas for two- and four-wheelers have been developed. Landscaping and minor finishing touches are underway. After completing physical work, senior railway officials will conduct final inspections and safety trials before opening the upgraded facilities for public use.

Railway authorities have noted that the redevelopment will ease congestion at Mysuru station and improve connectivity to the border district. The station is expected to support local trade, tourism, and industrial activities by making passenger and freight movement more efficient. Agricultural bodies and business stakeholders in the region view the upgraded station as a critical asset for boosting economic engagement and regional connectivity.

Chamarajanagar is among over 1,300 stations nationwide being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, launched in 2023. The initiative focuses on modernising facilities, enhancing passenger experience, and improving station infrastructure with a uniform standard of amenities across Indian Railways.
