The long-awaited missing link of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is scheduled to open on May 1, improving connectivity between the two cities and reducing travel time by about 30 minutes. Developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the 13.3 km stretch features two major tunnels, a 650 metre cable stayed bridge, and a 900 metre viaduct. The project faced delays due to heavy rainfall and strong winds in the ghat section but has now reached the final phase. Its completion is expected to ease congestion, improve safety, and provide a smoother route for commuters.
The missing link of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is set to open to traffic on May 1, according to officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). This section is expected to reduce travel time between Pune and Mumbai by approximately 30 minutes, providing a more direct and smoother route for commuters and long-distance travellers.
MSRDC's joint managing director said the project near Lonavala is in its final stages, with nearly 98% of construction work complete. Remaining tasks are being carefully monitored to ensure all safety and quality standards are fully met before the official opening.
The missing link covers a total of 13.3 km and includes two major tunnels measuring about 8.9 km and 1.9 km, a 650 metre cable stayed bridge built over 180 m above ground, and a 900 metre long viaduct. These structures have been designed to bypass the previous traffic-prone ghat stretch, which was known for sharp curves, steep gradients, and frequent congestion.
The project was originally planned to be completed by December of the past year. However, work was delayed by heavy rainfall and strong winds in the ghat section. Officials emphasised that construction was not rushed, particularly for the cable stayed bridge, which required careful engineering and safety checks.
Once completed, this link is expected to make travel between Pune and Mumbai faster, safer, and more predictable. It will ease congestion on the ghat section and reduce accident risks, particularly during peak travel periods. The project's total cost is estimated at around INR 6,695 crore.
Commuters and transport operators have welcomed the near completion of the missing link. Many have noted that the new section will offer a straighter route and reduce the pressure on the older, narrow ghat road. It is also expected to improve the overall traffic flow on the expressway, making it a vital infrastructure addition for daily and long-distance travellers alike.
