The Kaziranga elevated corridor project in Assam is set to move into the construction phase with the Prime Minister scheduled to lay its foundation later this month. The project involves upgrading the Kaliabor Numaligarh section of NH-715 at an estimated cost of over INR 6,000 crore. A key component is a 34.5-km elevated stretch through Kaziranga National Park aimed at reducing wildlife fatalities and improving traffic flow. The plan also includes four-laning, bypasses, and improved connectivity to airports and railway stations, supporting safer travel and regional economic activity.
The central government has taken a major step towards upgrading road infrastructure in Assam with the Kaziranga elevated corridor project, planned at an estimated cost of over INR 6,000 crore. The project focuses on improving the 85.7-km Kaliabor Numaligarh stretch of National Highway-715, which currently faces traffic congestion and safety concerns, particularly in areas passing through Kaziranga National Park.
A central feature of the project is the construction of a 34.5-km elevated corridor across the national park. This design is intended to allow free movement of wildlife beneath the highway, especially during the monsoon season when animals migrate due to flooding. The existing two-lane road has been identified as a major risk zone for animal deaths and traffic disruptions, prompting long-standing demands for a sustainable solution.
The Prime Minister is expected to lay the foundation stone later this month, formally marking the start of execution. Along with the elevated corridor, the project includes widening around 30.22 km of the existing highway to four lanes. Two greenfield bypasses are also planned, covering about 11.5 km at Jakhalabandha and nearly 9.5 km at Bokakhat, to divert through-traffic away from populated town areas and reduce congestion.
The upgraded corridor will strengthen connectivity with other key routes, including NH-127, NH-129 and State Highway-35. It is also designed to improve access to important transport hubs such as Tezpur, Lilabari and Jorhat airports, along with railway stations at Nagaon, Jakhalabandha and Bishwanath Chariali. This integrated connectivity is expected to support tourism, trade and movement across central and upper Assam.
Officials have indicated that the project will generate substantial direct and indirect employment during construction. The corridor is also expected to improve travel efficiency and safety for commuters while addressing ecological concerns in one of India's most sensitive wildlife regions. Planning for upgrades along this highway stretch has been underway for several years, with the current proposal bringing together infrastructure expansion and environmental safeguards in a single framework.
