Synopsis

The Kochi Metro integrated transport network recorded its highest single-day ridership during the recent New Year period, with 1,61,683 passenger trips across metro rail services, electric feeder buses and the Water Metro. Metro trains carried the bulk of commuters, supported by extended late-night operations. Feeder buses and Water Metro services also saw strong usage following extended schedules. The day also marked the network's highest single-day revenue collection of INR 44.67 lakh, reflecting growing public reliance on Kochi's integrated urban transport system.

The Kochi Metro transport network achieved its highest ever single-day ridership during the New Year celebrations, recording 1,61,683 passenger journeys across its combined services. The count includes metro rail operations, electric feeder buses and the Kochi Water Metro, making it the busiest day since the integrated system became operational.

Metro rail services accounted for 1,39,766 passenger trips, supported by extended train operations that continued late into the night to manage higher-than-usual travel demand. The decision to run services beyond regular hours helped ease congestion and ensured smoother movement across key corridors in the city.

Electric feeder buses, which were operated late into the night for the first time, carried 6,817 passengers. These services played an important role in improving last-mile connectivity by linking metro stations with residential areas and activity hubs, allowing commuters to complete their journeys without relying on private transport.

The Kochi Water Metro also witnessed strong passenger traffic, carrying around 15,000 commuters during the same period. Services were operated for longer hours to accommodate festive travel, highlighting the increasing acceptance of water-based public transport as a reliable alternative in the city's mobility network.

On the same day, the integrated transport system recorded its highest daily revenue so far, collecting INR 44.67 lakh from passenger fares and associated services. Officials attributed the performance to efficient operations, extended service hours, coordinated planning across modes and cooperation from commuters.

Since the launch of metro services, the Kochi Metro network has transported over 17.5 crore passengers in total. Ridership has shown consistent growth in recent years, with the previous financial year alone accounting for 3.65 crore journeys. Passenger numbers had already been rising through December, setting the stage for the New Year surge.
