The Indian Railways is redeveloping six major railway stations in Bihar to nearly double their train and passenger handling capacity in the coming years. Patna Junction will get five new suburban terminals to reduce congestion, while Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU), and Bhagalpur stations will receive upgraded yards, improved line capacity, and modern facilities. The Patna Jhajha DDU rail corridor is also being expanded with additional tracks. These projects aim to support growing rail traffic, enhance connectivity across Bihar, and improve passenger experience.
The Indian Railways has launched redevelopment projects at six key stations in Bihar to significantly enhance their capacity for trains and passengers. The initiative is part of broader efforts to modernise rail infrastructure and accommodate increasing traffic in the state.
Patna Junction is the largest beneficiary, with plans to add five suburban terminals on Hardinge Park land. The project, costing around INR 95 crore, will help decongest the main station, provide smoother suburban train operations, and strengthen regional connectivity.
Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Junction, a critical hub in eastern India, is undergoing upgrades including yard remodelling, new stabling lines, and enhanced traffic planning. The redevelopment, estimated at INR 17 crore, is intended to allow better regulation of train movements and support higher operational efficiency.
Gaya Junction's redevelopment is valued at around INR 296 crore. It includes new stabling yards, expanded line capacity, and advanced automatic signalling systems to enable safer and more efficient operations. Passenger amenities and circulation areas will also be upgraded to handle growing numbers of travellers.
Muzaffarpur Junction is receiving upgrades focused on yard expansion, improved line capacity, and modernised passenger facilities, with an investment of about INR 442 crore. These changes aim to ease congestion and accommodate future traffic growth.
Darbhanga and Bhagalpur stations are being modernised under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The work includes upgraded station infrastructure, better operational efficiency, and enhanced passenger experiences to support increased train frequency and smoother traffic management.
Beyond individual stations, the Patna Jhajha DDU corridor is set for major capacity improvements with plans to add third and fourth lines. This expansion will reduce congestion on one of Bihar's busiest rail routes and support both freight and passenger traffic growth.
Bihar's rail network has already seen multiple phases of development in recent years, including track electrification, new lines, and station modernisation projects. These current redevelopment efforts complement past infrastructure initiatives, aiming to ensure better connectivity, efficient train operations, and improved travel conditions across the state.
