The 63 km Lucknow Kanpur expressway will require at least three more months for completion due to the relocation of a 400 kV power transmission line. While most civil work is complete, moving the high voltage infrastructure demands careful coordination with power authorities. The expressway, once ready, will cut travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur from 120 minutes to 70 minutes, allowing speeds up to 120 km/h. An interchange linking it with the Ganga Expressway near Unnao will enhance regional connectivity toward Meerut and Prayagraj. NHAI is managing the costs of relocation.
The Lucknow Kanpur expressway, a six lane corridor spanning 63 kilometres, is now expected to take an additional three months to complete. Officials explained that while the majority of civil construction is finished, a 400 kV power transmission line, crucial for bulk electricity transfer across regions, needs to be shifted. Relocating such infrastructure involves significant technical work, specialized machinery, and careful planning to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
Coordination for the relocation has been carried out with the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited and the Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is overseeing the project, will bear the cost of the relocation and associated civil works. Senior officials noted that shifting the line will take several weeks due to its critical role in transferring large amounts of electricity.
Once operational, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur from the current 120 minutes to 70 minutes, with vehicles allowed to travel at speeds up to 120 km/h. The project also includes constructing an interchange near Unnao to connect the expressway with the Ganga Expressway, facilitating smoother travel toward Meerut and Prayagraj.
This expressway is part of a broader infrastructure push in Uttar Pradesh aimed at improving high-speed road connectivity between major cities. The corridor is expected to not only reduce travel time but also enhance freight movement and support regional economic activity. The careful planning for utility relocation highlights the challenges in large-scale infrastructure projects, where power and other utilities often influence timelines.
