Indian Railways plans to construct a new coaching terminal at Kendri in Nava Raipur to enhance train services and ease pressure on Raipur Junction. The terminal will feature nine platforms, multiple pit and stabling lines, and dedicated overhauling and mechanical lines to improve maintenance and operational efficiency. Capacity enhancements along the Bilaspur Nagpur section, including a fourth rail line and double track between Kharsia and Parmalkasa, are also underway. Raipur Junction is being modernised with improved passenger facilities. The initiative is part of a broader plan to double train-originating capacity by 2030.
Indian Railways has decided to establish a new coaching terminal at Kendri in Nava Raipur to expand train services and reduce congestion at Raipur Junction, a key station on the Bilaspur Nagpur section. This development is part of Indian Railways broader plan to double originating train capacity across major cities by 2030, aiming to accommodate growing passenger demand and improve operational efficiency.
Raipur Junction currently handles approximately 122 trains daily, but with only seven platforms, capacity limitations have resulted in some originating services being rerouted via Durg. To address this, the proposed Nava Raipur coaching terminal will include nine platforms, consisting of one home platform and four island platforms. It will have five pit lines and five stabling lines for maintenance and storage, along with four intermediate overhauling lines, four mechanical lines, and three shunting necks to facilitate efficient train operations.
In addition to the terminal, Indian Railways is working to enhance the Bilaspur Nagpur section by introducing a fourth rail line near Raipur, installing automatic signalling systems, and building a double track between Kharsia and Parmalkasa, which passes through Nava Raipur. These measures are intended to strengthen regional connectivity and support increased train services across Chhattisgarh.
Raipur Junction is undergoing redevelopment at an estimated cost of INR 456 crore. The modernisation focuses on improving passenger amenities, reorganising circulation areas, and easing crowd movement within the station. Railway officials and state authorities expect these upgrades to allow additional train services, improve frequency, and reduce passenger congestion.
Officials explained that the 2030 capacity expansion strategy will involve building additional platforms, pit lines, and stabling lines, along with modern terminals and enhanced maintenance facilities in urban and peripheral areas. Yard modernisation, line doubling, and multi-tracking initiatives form part of the plan. In Chhattisgarh, projects worth nearly INR 41,000 crore are already underway, covering line doubling, new corridors, bridge construction, and other supporting infrastructure.
The coaching terminal at Nava Raipur is expected to significantly improve train operations in the region, making services more efficient and responsive to passenger demand. By creating additional capacity and modern facilities, Indian Railways aims to support future growth in travel and strengthen the overall railway network in Chhattisgarh and surrounding areas.
