Synopsis

Union Power Minister Manohar Lal carried out a detailed review of major hydropower projects in Jammu and Kashmir during a two-day visit in the past week. The inspection covered ongoing works at Salal, Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kwar, Sawalkot, Dulhasti and Ratle projects across Reasi, Ramban and Kishtwar districts. NHPC was asked to accelerate sediment removal at Salal, while clear commissioning timelines were set for Chenab Valley projects. The visit also included interactions with workers and local residents and a plantation drive at project sites.

Union Power Minister Manohar Lal reviewed the progress of several major hydropower projects in Jammu and Kashmir during a two-day visit to the Union Territory in the past week, with a focus on timely execution and operational readiness. Officials said the review covered the 1,000 MW Pakal Dul, 624 MW Kiru and 540 MW Kwar power stations in Kishtwar district.

The visit began with an assessment of the 690 MW Salal Hydroelectric Project in Reasi district. The minister directed NHPC to speed up sediment removal operations in the Salal reservoir to improve efficiency and ensure better use of available water resources. The project, located on the Chenab River, has taken up desilting work after the termination of the Indus Waters Treaty last year, allowing accumulated silt to be cleared for optimal power generation.

While travelling to Kishtwar, the minister carried out an aerial inspection of the 1,856 MW Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project in Ramban district and later visited the 390 MW Dulhasti power station. He also inspected the Ratle Hydroelectric Project, where he laid the foundation stone for dam concreting works and urged the project team to adhere to defined timelines and execution standards.

During the second day of the tour, the minister inspected the Pakal Dul Power Station and reviewed its operational status, safety systems, generation capacity and technical activities along with senior officials. He noted that the project is expected to contribute significantly to the long-term development of Jammu and Kashmir by strengthening the region's energy infrastructure.

The visit concluded with a comprehensive review of the three Chenab Valley Power Projects Pakal Dul, Kiru and Kwar. NHPC officials briefed the minister on construction progress and key challenges. Following the review, directions were issued to commission the Pakal Dul and Kiru projects by December 2026, while the Kwar project has been targeted for completion by March 2028.

The minister also interacted with local residents and workers at various project sites, listening to their concerns and appreciating their efforts in difficult terrain and weather conditions. Along with Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal, he participated in a sapling plantation drive at the project locations, officials said.
