Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation carried out an intensive road-cleaning drive on the busy Sion-Panvel Highway as part of its ongoing efforts to improve air quality and reduce road dust. The campaign focused on deep cleaning of carriageways and footpaths using mechanised brushing, removal of accumulated soil and washing of roads with treated water through jetting spray systems. Alongside the highway stretch from Vashi to Belapur, several major internal roads across the city were also covered. The regular and sustained initiative aims to curb dust pollution, enhance road hygiene and improve overall urban air quality across Navi Mumbai.
In line with its sustained efforts to improve air quality and urban cleanliness, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) undertook an intensive cleaning drive on the heavily trafficked Sion-Panvel Highway on Sunday. The drive covered the stretch from Vashi to Belapur and focused on the systematic removal of dust and accumulated soil along roads and footpaths, a key contributor to air pollution in urban areas.
As part of the operation, hardened layers of soil deposited along road edges and pavements were scraped using mechanical brushes, collected and transported for disposal. This was followed by thorough washing of road surfaces using treated water, deployed through high-pressure jetting spray machines. The process is designed to significantly reduce airborne dust particles, particularly during dry weather conditions.
Beyond the Sion-Panvel Highway, the municipal body extended the deep-cleaning campaign to several important internal roads across Navi Mumbai. These included the Sector 17 main road in Koparkhairane, the Reliable Tech Park stretch in Airoli, Gajanan Chowk to the Shapoorji Pallonji site in Sector 6, Sanpada, Juhugaon main road, internal roads in Shiravane village and Jijamata Nagar in Ghansoli. The inclusion of interior routes highlights the civic body's focus on comprehensive city-wide cleanliness rather than limiting efforts to arterial roads alone.
The initiative forms part of NMMC's ongoing measures to control dust pollution and improve ambient air quality. Alongside road cleaning, specialised NCAP vehicles are being used to spray treated water in a mist-like manner, helping to suppress dust and reduce particulate matter in the air.
The Sunday drive was carried out under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, with Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar overseeing the operation. The campaign was coordinated by the Solid Waste Management Department under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Dr Ajay Gadade, Chief Sanitation Officer Ravindra Ingale and sanitation officers. Despite being a public holiday, more than 350 officers, employees and sanitation workers actively participated in the drive, underscoring the administration's commitment to maintaining cleanliness and improving environmental conditions across Navi Mumbai.
