Synopsis

Pune airport is preparing for significant growth in 2026, expecting an additional 10 lakh passengers, which marks around a 7 per cent rise compared to 2025. Domestic traffic grew by nearly 5 per cent last year, while international travel surged over 65 per cent. Authorities are focusing on infrastructure improvements, including a new Security Hold Area, terminal expansion, additional parking bays, and runway upgrades. The Indian Air Force allocated 15 extra flight slots, but airlines have not fully utilised them due to infrastructure limitations. Experts urge timely expansion to ensure smooth operations.

Pune airport expects around 10 lakh more passengers in 2026, building on growth recorded in 2025. Authorities and aviation experts have stressed the need for urgent infrastructure improvements to accommodate the rising traffic efficiently.

The airport plans to commission a new departure area with a full Security Hold Area (SHA) by March-April. This addition will improve check-in and security processing and expand the terminal's overall area. Airport director Santosh Dhoke highlighted that passenger traffic increased by roughly 6 per cent last year compared to 2024.

Most flights currently operate using Airbus A320 aircraft with about 170 seats. Discussions are ongoing with airlines to deploy Airbus A321 planes, offering around 221 seats, to handle more passengers per flight. Authorities aim for a 7 per cent growth in 2026 across passenger, cargo, and flight movements, building on a 5 per cent overall growth in 2025.

Domestic traffic rose by nearly 5 per cent in 2025, while international passenger movement increased by more than 65 per cent, reflecting Pune's growing global connectivity. Flight movements and cargo volumes also showed steady growth.

The Indian Air Force allocated 15 new flight slots in October, raising the total to 237, but airlines have not fully utilised them, partly due to limited infrastructure such as parking bays. Transfer of 15 acres of land from the IAF to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for additional parking bays is still pending.

Experts highlight that ongoing capacity expansion is crucial to avoid congestion, flight delays, baggage delays, and parking bay shortages. Renovation and integration of the old terminal with the new terminal, runway extensions, and additional parking and remote bays are recommended to ensure safe and smooth operations. Frequent flyers have reported instances where aircraft could not find parking bays, causing delays, or passengers had to remain onboard longer than necessary, underscoring infrastructure pressures.

Authorities are focusing on addressing these constraints to ensure Pune airport can handle future demand effectively, supporting both airlines and passengers while maintaining operational efficiency.
