GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited has completed a crucial regulatory step for the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport with the successful conduct of a validation flight. The exercise assessed runway readiness, air navigation systems and overall airside infrastructure as part of the process to obtain an aerodrome licence. Officials from the civil aviation ministry, Airports Authority of India, Andhra Pradesh government and GMR were present. With construction largely completed, the development signals steady progress toward starting commercial operations and strengthening regional air connectivity.
GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited has successfully conducted a validation flight at the Bhogapuram International Airport, marking an important step in the airport's operational readiness. The flight was carried out to test critical airside infrastructure, including the runway, taxiways, navigational aids and communication systems, as required by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for granting an aerodrome licence.
The validation flight was operated using an Air India aircraft and was closely monitored by officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Airports Authority of India. Senior representatives from the Andhra Pradesh government and the GMR Group were also present during the exercise, reflecting coordinated oversight at both the central and state levels.
This process forms a mandatory part of regulatory clearance before commercial flight operations can begin. Successful completion indicates that the airport's core aviation systems are functioning in line with prescribed safety and operational standards. It also allows the project to move to the next phase of inspections and approvals required for passenger services.
The Bhogapuram airport is being developed under a public-private partnership model on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis by GMR. Construction work at the site is reported to be more than 90 percent complete, with terminal buildings, airside infrastructure and support facilities nearing readiness.
Once operational, the airport is expected to handle an initial passenger capacity of around six million passengers annually, with scope for expansion in later phases. The project also includes plans for cargo handling facilities and associated development aimed at supporting trade, tourism and employment in the region.
The new airport is positioned to complement the existing Visakhapatnam airport, which has capacity constraints, and is expected to play a key role in improving air connectivity for northern Andhra Pradesh. Road connectivity and supporting infrastructure around Bhogapuram are also being planned to integrate the airport with the wider regional transport network.
