Sindhudurg Airport in Maharashtra's Konkan region has received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for round-the-clock, all-weather operations, significantly enhancing its operational capability. Operated by IRB Infrastructure Developers, the airport is now certified for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), enabling aircraft to operate safely during low visibility and adverse weather conditions. The approval includes satellite-based Required Navigation Performance procedures along with a backup navigation aid, improving reliability and airline confidence. The development is expected to support passenger traffic growth, strengthen regional connectivity, and boost tourism and economic activity across the Konkan belt.
Sindhudurg Airport, located in Maharashtra's Konkan region, has achieved a major milestone after receiving approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for 24x7 all-weather operations. The airport, operated by IRB Infrastructure Developers, can now handle flight movements round the clock, including during periods of low visibility and adverse weather, marking a significant upgrade in its operational readiness.
Commercial operations at Sindhudurg Airport began in October 2021, and the latest clearance is expected to further enhance its reliability and attractiveness for airlines. According to IRB Infrastructure, the airport has been certified for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), allowing aircraft to land and take off using instrument-based navigation rather than relying solely on visual cues. This capability is crucial for maintaining consistent operations during monsoon conditions and fog, which often disrupt flights in coastal regions.
The DGCA approval also covers the implementation of satellite-based Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures, along with the availability of a backup ground-based navigation aid. Together, these systems provide pilots with precise approach guidance and an additional layer of safety, ensuring dependable flight operations for a wide range of aircraft throughout the year. RNP defines the navigation accuracy required for specific airspace or flight procedures, enabling safer and more efficient approaches.
Jai S Sadana, Chief Adviser and Head of IRB Sindhudurg Airport, said the clearance for 24x7 all-weather operations would boost airline confidence, support sustained traffic growth and contribute meaningfully to economic and tourism development across the Konkan region. Improved operational capability is expected to encourage airlines to add more services and increase flight frequencies.
Further strengthening connectivity, the Mumbai-Sindhudurg route under the state's regional connectivity scheme is expected to commence in the coming months. This will make travel more convenient for residents while also improving access for tourists visiting the Konkan coast.
Passenger traffic at the airport has already shown steady growth. The facility recorded close to 11,000 passenger movements in December for the first time. In line with rising demand, aircraft parking capacity at the airport has been doubled from three to six aircraft stands, positioning Sindhudurg Airport for higher traffic volumes in the future.
