Synopsis

The widening of Nashik's Rane Nagar vehicular underpass on the Mumbai -Agra highway is now expected to take an additional month, extending beyond the original December completion plan. The project, which started in mid 2025, aims to add two extra lanes to ease congestion on service roads and separate crossover traffic. Crossover movement reopened in November after partial underpass extension. Ramps for the associated flyover are also under construction. Nearby, the Indiranagar underpass is undergoing similar upgrades, impacting local traffic flows and detours in the area.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has indicated that the Rane Nagar vehicular underpass widening on the Mumbai-Agra highway in Nashik city may take another month to complete. The project, launched in July 2025, involves adding two additional lanes to address ongoing traffic congestion on service roads and at crossover points. While the work was initially expected to finish by the end of December, officials confirmed that the extension will allow vehicles using service roads to pass through the underpass without interfering with crossover traffic.

Rising residential and commercial development along the highway has increased traffic volumes on both sides, causing persistent snarls, particularly where crossover traffic intersects with service road traffic. Many motorists traveling on service roads who do not need to cross the main highway often get caught in crossover congestion. The expansion aims to provide two dedicated lanes for service road users traveling from Pathardi Phata toward Indiranagar and vice versa, reducing bottlenecks.

During the initial phase, the underpass was fully closed to traffic. Crossover traffic was restored in November 2025 after partial lengthening of the structure, allowing vehicles to move while construction continued. Officials have also highlighted that ramp construction for the flyover running alongside the underpass is ongoing, with completion expected by the end of January.

A few kilometres away, the Indiranagar underpass is undergoing similar widening work, resulting in temporary closure for crossover traffic. This has contributed to changes in traffic patterns and local detours, reflecting NHAI's broader effort to upgrade multiple junctions along the Mumbai-Agra highway. Once complete, these improvements are expected to provide smoother movement for both crossover and service road traffic.
