Ludhiana civic authorities have issued a 30-day deadline for all commercial buildings, industrial units, educational institutions, and coaching centres to obtain a fire safety No Objection Certificate (NOC) as part of a safety enforcement drive. The order follows a fire at a Basant Nagar scrap storage facility that caused explosions and damaged nearby homes, prompting an investigation. Under the Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Act and the Punjab Fire and Emergency Service Act, failure to comply can result in fines up to INR 50,000 and sealing of premises. Online applications and guidance from the local fire brigade are available to assist property owners in meeting the requirements.
Ludhiana's municipal authorities have mandated that owners of commercial structures, industrial facilities, educational institutions, and coaching centres secure a fire safety No Objection Certificate (NOC) within 30 days. This action is part of an intensified compliance drive to ensure fire safety across the city.
The move comes after a significant fire at a Basant Nagar scrap storage facility, where old air conditioner compressors and electronic waste exploded, causing damage to the building and surrounding homes. The incident triggered a probe and highlighted gaps in fire preparedness in densely populated areas.
Officials cited provisions under the Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Act, 2012, and the newly enforced Punjab Fire and Emergency Service Act, 2024. They warned that non-compliance could lead to fines up to INR 50,000 and sealing of premises. Industrial and commercial property owners are also expected to ensure that their buildings meet all fire safety requirements before applying for the NOC.
The municipal corporation has emphasized that all fire safety measures must align with the National Building Code, 2016. To make compliance easier, applicants can use an online portal that provides instructions, fee details, and eligibility requirements. Designated officers from the Ludhiana fire brigade will assist applicants with technical guidance and inspections to ensure all safety norms are met.
Authorities have also stressed that educational institutions, coaching centres, and industrial units must prioritize fire prevention arrangements, including installing alarms, extinguishers, and emergency exits. The directive aims to reduce the risk of accidents and improve safety awareness among property owners and occupants.
The Basant Nagar fire incident has underscored the importance of regular fire safety audits and adherence to regulations. Officials have asked all building owners to treat the deadline seriously to prevent penalties and avoid potential hazards.
