Delhi's mayor has urged property owners to take advantage of the Property Tax Amnesty Scheme 2025-26 (SUNIYO) to settle pending tax dues. The scheme allows taxpayers to pay the main property tax for the current year and the previous five years, while interest and penalties on older dues are waived. The city has already collected significant revenue under this programme, with residential and non residential properties contributing over INR 803 crore combined. Officials note a rise in taxpayer participation and new registrations, indicating improved compliance and stronger municipal revenue.
Delhi's mayor has encouraged property owners to use the city's Property Tax Amnesty Scheme 2025-26, known locally as SUNIYO, to clear pending property tax dues. Under this programme, taxpayers can pay the principal property tax for the current year and the previous five years while getting a full waiver on accumulated interest and penalties. The scheme applies to dues up to the 2020-21 fiscal year and has been designed to promote compliance and increase participation in the city's tax network.
The municipal authorities have allowed a small 5 percent late fee for payments made during the extended period. By settling dues now, property owners can avoid additional charges and take advantage of the incentive before the scheme closes at the end of this month. Officials have highlighted that the programme has been well received, with thousands of property owners participating.
By the end of last month, over 166,500 taxpayers had cleared their dues under the scheme. Residential properties contributed approximately INR 188.28 crore, while non residential properties added around INR 615.32 crore, bringing the total collection to over INR 803 crore. A significant number of new taxpayers joined the system for the first time, reflecting broader outreach and increased awareness about tax compliance.
Overall, property tax collections have risen compared with previous periods, both in terms of revenue and the number of taxpayers. Officials noted that the scheme not only helps clear outstanding dues but also strengthens the municipal tax base and ensures better funding for civic projects.
The deadline for the amnesty programme is approaching, and municipal authorities are urging property owners to complete their payments to benefit from the waiver on penalties and interest. This effort aims to make the tax system more inclusive and manageable while encouraging timely payments in the future.
