Synopsis

The Delhi government has announced a capital investment plan of approximately INR 17,000 crore over the next three years to strengthen the capital's power infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted, high-quality electricity supply. The investments will focus on upgrading transmission lines, grid substations and distribution networks through Delhi Transco Limited and distribution companies. With peak power demand already touching around 8,400 MW in 2025 and projected to rise sharply by 2030, the government is aligning its power strategy with long-term demand growth. The plan also emphasises rooftop solar adoption, last-mile reliability and efficient use of limited urban land.

The Delhi government will implement a capital expenditure plan of around INR 17,000 crore over the next three years to enhance power infrastructure across the national capital. The decision was reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, which assessed ongoing projects and outlined the action plan for the power sector up to 2029.

Under the plan, Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) and the city's distribution companies will strengthen transmission lines, grid substations and the distribution network. The chief minister said the objective is not only to add capacity but to ensure uninterrupted, safe and high-quality power supply in all parts of Delhi.

Officials highlighted that Delhi's peak electricity demand has been rising steadily, reaching about 8,400 MW in 2025. On average, demand is growing by 4-5 per cent annually due to population growth, increased use of air conditioners and electrical appliances, and the adoption of electric vehicles. Peak demand is typically recorded during the summer months of June and July.

According to long-term projections, Delhi's peak power demand could reach 11,500-12,000 MW by 2030 and further rise to 19,000-20,000 MW by 2040 if current trends continue. The government said it views this growth as an opportunity and is aligning the power system with future needs to avoid supply stress.

The meeting also discussed the Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme, with a focus on accelerating rooftop solar installations, particularly on government buildings. Directions were issued to improve last-mile supply, ensure faster fault restoration and explore efficient use of unused and underutilised land, including infrastructure placement under flyovers. The government aims to make Delhi a model for reliable, sustainable and consumer-centric power systems in the coming years.
