Maharashtra's smart city projects are nearing completion, yet works worth INR 1,555 crore under the Smart Cities Mission remain unfinished. While most tasks under the mission, which aims to improve urban infrastructure, mobility, and sanitation, have been delivered, the pending works include road construction, public space improvements, water supply upgrades, and other civic projects. Delays are due to coordination issues, land acquisition challenges, and procedural clearances. City Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) are being urged to complete these tasks quickly so that citizens can fully benefit from the planned infrastructure.
Maharashtra is close to completing its smart city projects, but about INR 1,555 crore worth of work remains unfinished. The pending projects span road networks, public spaces, water supply systems, and other urban infrastructure improvements. Authorities have emphasized that these works must be completed promptly to ensure full utilisation of the benefits planned under the Smart Cities Mission.
The mission, launched nationally in 2015, provides central financial assistance to selected urban areas for improving infrastructure, mobility, sanitation, and overall quality of life. Maharashtra has received most of the allocated funds, but no new central funding is available for this financial year. This has created pressure on city agencies and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) to complete remaining projects with the resources already in hand.
SPVs in the state have successfully executed most planned works, with completed projects now being integrated into regular municipal operations. For instance, in Nagpur, several roads, parks, and civic facilities are already functional, while a few projects remain under construction. The incomplete tasks have been delayed due to challenges such as coordination with multiple departments, delays in land acquisition, and procedural clearances required from state and local authorities.
Nationally, about 93% of the Smart Cities Mission projects have been completed, but a small portion remains pending due to similar administrative and technical challenges. Maharashtra's pending projects highlight the ongoing need for careful monitoring, coordination, and timely execution to ensure citizens receive the full benefits of upgraded urban infrastructure. Authorities have urged SPVs to accelerate remaining works, focusing on delivering projects that directly improve public mobility, sanitation, and urban living standards.
As projects are handed over to municipal corporations, the focus will shift toward maintaining and efficiently operating these new urban assets. The completion of pending works is crucial for achieving the mission's intended outcomes and ensuring sustainable improvements across Maharashtra's smart cities.
