Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) has stepped up efforts to improve drainage systems on key flood-prone roads across the city, aiming to reduce recurring waterlogging during heavy rains and ensure smoother traffic movement. Projects worth over 3.8 crore INR are underway in areas such as Savitri Cinema Road, Okhla Phase I service lane, LSR red light near Blue Bells School, and the Shantivan to Vijay Ghat drain corridor. Measures include widening and deepening drains, repairing damaged sections, and enhancing flow efficiency to prevent congestion and local flooding.
The Delhi government is actively working to upgrade stormwater drainage along several city roads that often face waterlogging during heavy rainfall. The Public Works Department has planned these improvements to prevent accumulation of rainwater, ensure smoother traffic flow, and enhance road safety. These works are taking advantage of the current dry period to complete tasks efficiently.
For the 2025-26 financial year, more than 3.8 crore INR has been allocated to upgrade drains at four critical locations prone to flooding. The selected areas are vulnerable due to low terrain, high traffic density, and industrial or institutional activity, which historically worsened waterlogging during monsoon seasons.
Savitri Cinema Road is receiving upgrades worth 65 lakh INR, focusing on sections between S and W blocks that frequently experience standing water. The project will widen and deepen drains and ensure smooth water flow, reducing delays for commuters and damage to the road surface.
In Okhla Phase I, 67.2 lakh INR is being invested to improve drainage along the service lane from the Delhi Jal Board gate to the SLF gate on SA Road. This area, often used by industrial traffic, has seen frequent overflow that disrupts goods movement and blocks access for emergency services. The work will stabilize the drainage system and improve water evacuation.
The LSR red light and Blue Bells School zone in south Delhi is another key area where congestion and water accumulation affect daily traffic, including school and public transport vehicles. 96.6 lakh INR is being used to repair and adjust drains in this area, correcting slopes, deepening channels, and increasing capacity to handle heavy rain.
The largest investment of 1.5 crore INR is for the stormwater drain between Shantivan red light service lane and the Vijay Ghat drain, a critical corridor in the city center. Damage to this drain has previously caused significant waterlogging, and the project will restore and strengthen it to handle peak water flows efficiently.
These projects are part of a broader effort by Delhi authorities to reduce flooding problems caused by outdated drainage infrastructure, rapid urban growth, and increasingly heavy rainfall events. Previous years have seen similar upgrades, including the construction of trunk drains, underpass drainage improvements, and low-lying area interventions. Together, these measures are designed to enhance citywide stormwater management and prepare Delhi for future monsoon challenges.
