Kolkata Metro's Blue Line faced a disruption earlier this week when a train had to apply its emergency brake near Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station, halting operations between Dakshineswar and Maidan for about one and a half hours. Passengers from the affected train were safely evacuated at Tollygunje, and services fully resumed later. Metro officials said the cause of the emergency braking is under investigation. The incident adds to recent operational snags on the line, highlighting challenges in maintaining uninterrupted commuter services.
Kolkata Metro's Blue Line services were interrupted earlier this week due to a technical problem that forced the emergency brake on a train near Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station, a Metro spokesperson confirmed. The incident led to truncated operations along the route, affecting commuters between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations for roughly ninety minutes.
Metro officials said the driver applied the emergency brake as a safety measure, and the cause of this sudden action is now under investigation. Passengers from the affected train were evacuated at Tollygunje station in an organized manner, ensuring no injuries occurred.
During the disruption, limited services ran only between Dakshineswar and Maidan because the southern part of the Blue Line does not have a crossover facility, which prevents quicker turnaround of trains. Commuters faced delays, with some, including children and senior citizens, walking short distances to reach operational stations.
This is not the first disruption on the Blue Line in recent weeks. Similar operational snags due to signal issues and other technical glitches have affected thousands of daily commuters, leading to frustration and raising concerns over service reliability. Metro officials emphasized that these incidents are being closely examined to identify the root causes and improve system resilience.
Normal services over the entire stretch from Dakshineswar to Sahid Khudiram resumed by early afternoon, restoring regular connectivity. The Metro team continues to monitor operations to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
