The Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) has the potential to significantly reshape urban mobility and unlock economic opportunities along its corridors, according to a recent report by real estate consultancy Knight Frank India released earlier this week. The report highlights the role of RRTS in reducing travel time, widening labour markets and enabling closer integration of peripheral cities with national and global value chains. The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor, the flagship RRTS project, is progressing in phases and is expected to cut travel time between Delhi and Meerut to under an hour. The study also underscores the importance of coordinated planning and affordable housing to ensure long-term success.
The Regional Rapid Transit System has the potential to transform urban mobility and stimulate economic activity along its corridors, according to a report released earlier this week by Knight Frank India. The report, titled Regional Rapid Transit System: Testing the Commuters Pulse, examines how high-speed regional connectivity can reshape travel behaviour and urban development patterns.
The consultancy stated that the RRTS represents a significant step in India's efforts to achieve faster, more efficient and better-integrated regional mobility. According to the report, the system can substantially reduce travel time, expand labour markets and enable peripheral cities to integrate more closely with national and global value chains.
The flagship RRTS corridor linking Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut is being developed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation and has already entered a phased rollout stage. Approved at a cost of over INR 30,000 crore, the 82-kilometre corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to less than one hour once fully operational.
Knight Frank India's chairman and managing director Shishir Baijal noted that the RRTS should be viewed not only as a transport solution but also as a catalyst for decentralised economic growth. He indicated that, for investors and developers, RRTS corridors offer clear growth opportunities where infrastructure development aligns with land-use planning and commercial activity.
Baijal also highlighted that the long-term success of the RRTS would depend on coordinated planning that integrates transport networks with land-use strategies and investment priorities to support sustainable urbanisation.
The report described the RRTS as a structural intervention in India's urban growth trajectory, adding that its effectiveness would rely on more than just infrastructure delivery. It emphasised the need for coordinated efforts to expand economic opportunities, strengthen social and physical infrastructure and ensure the availability of affordable housing along RRTS corridors.
